Summary

In Chapter 12, Ann accompanied Patrick to Ketch Antiques. Patrick was emphatic that they would find the missing deck or document to prove their theory, but Ann knew his resolve was edged with the knowledge that it may no longer exist. Patrick followed Stephen into a separate room and indicated that Ann should stay behind. As she waited, she pulled the card out of the packet Patrick had handed her. She “flexed [it] instinctively, just a test, to feel what Rachel had talked about, the strange stiffness of the cards, and as [she] did so, [she] felt one of the edges pop” (126). A false front had come loose on the card revealing another image beneath. When Ann heard footsteps approaching, she jammed the card into her purse.
