Summary

Part One: Dur Pig starts with an illustration of Jack and his stuffed pig on the beach. Chapter One: "Dur Pig" describes the pig as a small toy made of soft material with squishy trotters to wipe away tears. The toy is gray and faded with buttons for eyes that Jack's mother sewed in an operation. His name is shortened to DP. Jack never goes to bed without him and often hides DP in cozy places where DP likes to sleep. The two always play together, and Jack mistakingly tries to recycle DP not knowing what it means. He panics the first time his mother washes DP but forgives her when DP is returned. When Jack is four, he forgets where he buried DP at the beach. While DP is found, Jack thinks it is not far that DP cannot come...
