When the novel begins, readers are introduced to Alex, who has been on the run for three years. She is in a constant state of paranoia. When she goes to sleep, she sleeps in a bathtub. She sets her bed up with a fake body complete with fake blood. She booby traps her apartment with poison gas. She only sleeps with an iPad against her back set to rumble if the power supply fluctuates based on the presence of another person in the house.
