Summary

By the time Catherine turned 40 years old, she had divorced Antoine and married Ducon. A few months later, Catherine discovered that Ducon was having an affair with his secretary, so Catherine divorced Ducon. Catherine was extremely hurt and furious. It seemed that she then wished to resume her relationship with Antoine. However, by that time, Antoine had married someone else. Around the same time, Claude died of breast cancer. Catherine was extremely distraught. She moved with her daughters into an apartment in Paris. Antoine came to visit the daughters almost every night, which bot delighted and deeply pained Catherine, as she was still in love with him. Her mental health continued to deteriorate.
