Summary

The story takes place near the end of the 1700s. The protagonist is a renowned scientist, referred to in the story only as Aylmer. Aylmer is highly dedicated. The narration states that he may or may not believe that science will give humans complete control over nature. The only great passion in Aylmer’s life is his love for his beautiful young wife, Georgiana. This passion may possibly equal, but not exceed, his passion for science. One day, Aylmer remarks upon the birthmark on Georgiana’s cheek. Georgiana likes the birthmark. However, Aylmer states that it seems to be the only imperfection on Georgiana’s entire physical form.
