Part II The Shambles Summary and Analysis

Cabbarus has sailed for Westmark, though Queen Augusta and King Constantine are unaware of it. The war has begun.

It is Duke Conrad's job to get rid of the King Constantine. Cabarrus' right hand man, Pankratz is supposed to do the job at Conrad's country estate. Conrad invites his unsuspecting nephew to the countryside. Constantine, thinking it is a chance for Conrad to influence him against Westmark, is not excited to go. However, when Conrad doesn't mention Westmark, the young King is relieved and enjoys himself. Knowing his nephews passion for precious stones and interesting rocks, Conrad tells him that there is a special kind of rock in gorge in the woods.
