Summary

In Chapter 32, Brother Edik gets lost in the woods. He is afraid of the dark and recalls his father berating him about it when he was young. A man with a knife between his teeth appears on the path in front of him.

Jack tries to convince Beatryce not to confront the king in Chapter 33. As he speaks, Beatryce recalls a memory of her departed tutor. He took her stargazing one night and taught her about other planets. Her mother liked the tutor because he nurtured Beatryce’s curiosity and strong will. She tells Jack she is determined to hand the king their sword and to teach him to read.

Beatryce starts teaching Jack the alphabet in Chapter 34. Cannoc is out on an errand. Jack shoves Answelica away, mesmerized at the alphabet before him.
