Beach Life Summary

Richard remembers breaking up with his first serious girlfriend, and of talking his father into giving him the money to leave the country. He remembers that as soon as he boarded the airplane, he forgot about his problems, and even that England existed.

Richard soon assimilates into the beach commune in a similar fashion, and he feels he has always lived there. He accepts everything he is given and everything he is told. Richard, Etienne and Francoise all settle into the routines of life in the commune, and are assigned to the fishing detail. Richard's friend who has the Nintendo is Keaty, and he is an unhappy worker in the garden detail. Richard describes the leaders of the various details, and states that Sal is the defined leader of the commune, the one who makes sure everyone else is working according...
