Part One - 1895: Pages 35 - 73 Summary

Ralph and Harry go back to the newly christened Harkness Mine and Harry uses his skills to plan the development and extraction of the minerals. Afterward, they spend days randomly sampling the surrounding area, but find nothing. They are about to return to camp when Ralph sees smoke. He spurs his horse in that direction leaving Harry to follow. When they get close, Bazo, the Matabele son of Gandang and grandson to the great Mzilikazi, steps out suddenly from the forest. He greets Ralph as Henshaw and Ralph is overjoyed, amazed that he is even alive. Bazo tells Ralph the smoke was from a hive he was smoking out, and Ralph convinces him to bring his wife, Tanase and son to join their camp for the night to catch up. Tanase doesn't trust Ralph, but...
