Summary

As the novel begins, the narrator indicates that the first two chapters take place on Day One.

In Chapter 1, the narrator is in a forest calling out to a woman named Anna. He stops short when he realizes that he has forgotten who Anna is and why he is calling for her. The narrator does not remember how he came to be in the forest. He hears a woman he assumes is Anna calling for help. Then, he sees a woman being chased by a man. He hears a gunshot and a scream. Someone walks up behind the narrator tells him “east” (4) and drops a compass into his pocket.

In Chapter 2, walking east, the narrator arrives at a Georgian manor house that appears to be abandoned. A butler opens the door and the narrator tells him they have to call the authorities. A...
