Prologue/Part 1: Chapters 1-13 Summary

Chapter 1:

It is raining and midnight rounds at San Francisco Municipal Hospital are just beginning. In the ICU Jessie Falk is having a dream about her childhood. Jessie wakes, screaming for a pain in her chest.

"Oh God, I can't breathe. What's happening? I can't get my breath. It's horrible. I'm not fine." Chap. 1, p. 4

Jessie remembers that she is in the hospital. She sees a familiar face and notices that he is not coming to help. The person says Jessie is dying and it is beautiful to watch her cross over.

Chapter 2:

The Night Walker bends over the bed. He wonders where Jessie is now. He straightens the covers and arranges Jessie's hair. He places two coins over Jessie's eyes.
