Summary

In Chapter 3, Jim's mother disinfects the minor wound on his chin, the result of his fight with Shelby. Jim feels that going back to school will not be so bad because Shelby will have a black eye. Jim's mother tells him to stop fighting, but Jim notes that his father seems secretly pleased that Jim was fighting with Shelby (indicating that their friendship is over). The next day, Jim's family goes for their annual end-of-summer picnic at the Buffalo Bill Reservoir. Uncle Spencer and Aunt Louise join them. At one point, Spencer and Ron talk about exploring Frost Cave, which has now been closed off to the public. There are legends that one of the tunnels opens into the “Rainbow Room” with phosphorescent walls that glowed in many colors, a ceiling of gold, and clear water flowing from the walls.
