Importance: Here the author pokes fun at the teen slasher novel by making a direct nod the deaths that will occur later. This line, as well as Meg's promise to herself a little later on to have "fun" with T.J., "Even if I die trying" (19) are darkly playful for a horror novel. At the same time, it operates as a larger metaphor for the repression of life. Meg does nearly "die" in order to have "fun" this weekend. As a result of her near death experience, she does go on a sort of thrilling adventure and is finally able to be with T.J.
