Chapter 50 Summary

Kaoru is eager to marry Ukifune, but her mother, Chujounokimi, is not keen on the match. Because Kaoru and Ukifune are of entirely separate status, she turns down Kaoru's offer and, instead, arranges for her to marry a lieutenant. Chujounokimi is incorrect in her assessment of Kaoru, but there is nothing that he can do to correct it since he does not want anyone to know that he is a bastard child.

Though Chujounokimi is eager to give his stepdaughter, Ukifune, a good marriage, Chujounokimi's husband, the governor of Hitachi, loves his real daughter much more than his stepdaughter and he wants to give her a good marriage first. Once the lieutenant discovers that Ukifune is the stepdaughter of the governor, the lieutenant changes his mind and decides that he would rather marry the governor's real daughter. For this, he needs substantial support...
