Jarrett

Jarrett is the main character and first person narrator of the novel. In the novel’s prologue, Jarrett starts to reminisce about the first time he “worked at a camp for kids with life-threatening illnesses” (2). He returns to his mementos, pictures, and scrapbook from his time volunteering at Camp Sunshine in Maine. He realizes that although roughly two decades have passed since, the experience “changed the trajectory of [his] life” and continues to influence how he thinks about himself and relates to others (2). Jarrett’s introductory reflections in the prologue give way to his past tense recollection of his Camp Sunshine experience throughout Chapters 1 - 8. Beginning at the end of the prologue, Jarrett assumes the state of mind of his teenage self in order to capture and convey the significance of Camp Sunshine to him at that young age.
