Annie O'Sullivan

Annie O'Sullivan is the main character of the novel. Annie is a thirty-something Realtor who was abducted at gunpoint from an open house by a psychopath. The novel begins four months after Annie returns home after her yearlong captivity. Annie is constantly plagued with anxiety and fear in the aftermath of her experiences and is seeing a psychiatrist to help her deal with what happened to her.

As the novel progresses, Annie tells the psychiatrist about her experiences not only in captivity, but her life beforehand and her relationships with the people who were most important to her before her abduction. These people include her mother and stepfather, as well as a boyfriend and best friend.
