Summary

Ingrid’s first encounter with her future husband Hamish immediately led Martha to think that they would eventually marry, which they did three years later. While Ingrid was the only one present for Hamish’s proposal, an audience witnessed Jonathan’s: unbeknownst to Martha, he had invited most of her family, even Patrick. Ingrid comforted Martha when their mother exclaimed that Martha was pregnant, a false and drunken announcement which Jonathan took far too seriously. Most laughed at the exclamation but Ingrid voiced her objections, saying that Jonathan knew nothing of Martha. Later, privately, he changed his mind.

That night, Martha also found out from Oliver about Patrick’s decade-long feelings towards her but married Jonathan anyway. On their honeymoon, to Jonathan’s delight, Martha shared that she too had changed her mind and now wanted a child. She ate alone that evening...
