Summary

Pen resigns from her job. Chloe helps Pen begin her baking business, Pen’s Pasteles. She brings her first box over to Mrs. Damas’ apartment where she is having tea with three of her friends. Pen tries “to hide my expression and the fact that I’m dissecting their every move. One of the women takes a bite of one of the marranitos. She sighs. The other bites down on one of the empanadas and she goes completely still, eyes closed” (320). Pen begins to believe in her dream.

In Chapters 26, Xander paints his food truck and imagines Pen working in the order window, surrounded by the smell of coconut cake. He has been enjoying all of the extra time he spends with his friends working on the truck and playing pranks on each other. When Pen arrives for her surprise, he has her...
