Otto and William's Brownstone

Otto and William's brownstone is one of the primary settings for the story. Twenty-five years prior to the narrative present, when Otto and William decided to move in together, Otto purchased the property. Once they finished renovating, they began renting out the top story to a young woman named Naomi. Shortly thereafter, her partner, Margaret, moved in. Over the years, while Otto has worked as a lawyer, William has been in charge of caring for the house and garden.

The brownstone is the frequent background for Otto and William's conversations. The couple discusses things in their personal space that they might not discuss elsewhere. In the early half of the story, Otto takes comfort in his life here with William. Toward the end of the story, Otto becomes agitated by the sound of William moving through the house. He is desperate to be alone.
