Summary

Chapter One: Twins opens as the writer, Sarah Ruhl, says she had to learn how to navigate her life when her smile walked off her face ten years ago. She says the story actually begins 20 years ago when she learned that she was having twins months before her first Broadway play. She and her husband, Tony, celebrated that their previous miscarriage returned. However, Sarah was terrified that her body and mind would not hold onto that much life. He told her to have faith as she opened a fortune cookie: “Deliver what is inside of you, and it will save your life” (3).

While everyone was excited, Sarah felt overwhelmed and feared that she could not take care of all three children or that she would lose her writing. Her mother mentioned that Sarah’s great-aunt had stillborn twins. Three months into the pregnancy...
