Deadwood

Deadwood is a town in South Dakota where Rose grows up. It is in the woods near Deadwood on her eleventh birthday that Rose discovers the hand in the ground, which propels her down a lifetime path of research and wonder about the hand. Rose, in adulthood, leaves Deadwood, and does not even return for the funeral of her father.
