Summary

In Chapter 4, Julian continues to “reflect on the many faces” (36) of Edward Avon. He considers Edward’s suggestion to establish the Republic of Literature in the basement of the bookshop. As the idea grows on him, he becomes increasingly impatient to put the plan into action. He imagines that he sees Edward passing the store, but he does not encounter Edward for a week.

Julian decides to visit Celia Merridew, the owner of the antiques store where Edward mentioned he had researched Julian. Julian visits Celia under the pretext of discussing the town arts festival, but secretly hopes to gain information about Edward. They make small talk and Celia admits she has heard that Julian had a reputation as an impressive financial trader in London.
