Chapter 4 Summary

Matt's trips into the forest continue even though he cannot shoot any game. He thinks the animals all know this, and they seem unafraid as they play very near to him. His spirits pick up since the July weather is warm, and most of the flies and mosquitoes have disappeared. He is thankful that he can still catch an abundance of fish.

One day on Matt's return to the cabin with a nice catch of fish, he notices that the front door is open. As he gets nearer, he sees that the cabin is a shambles. Food is strewn all over, and the flour has spilled out, as has the molasses. His food is all ruined, and the tools have been scattered all over the cabin floor.
