Summary

One day, Cécile goes to the local church to deliver medicine to the nuns, and then she goes to search for Jacques. She finds him in the church sanctuary. Local children, including Jacques, often enjoy coming to the church to admire the beautiful architecture of the interior. Jacques is interested in Christianity and Christian saints. In the church, they see kindly old Francois de Laval, the former bishop of Quebec. He is sometimes referred to as Monseigneur l’Ancien. Laval gives the children some money so that they can buy candles to light for prayer. They then leave the church. The narration then recalls an incident when Jacques left his home one winter night to walk around in the snow. The town’s new bishop, Bishop Saint-Vallier, had recently arrived.
