Summary

Chapter 17 shifts to the day after Candace discovered that she was pregnant. She tried to figure out the best way to break the news to Jonathan. At work, Candace found that the Spectra offices were deserted except for Blythe. Blythe informed Candace that the offices were closed due to an approaching hurricane. Candace and Blythe decided to do some work because they were already at the office anyway. Blythe said sadly that a work friend of hers had recently contracted Shen Fever.

Later, Candace talked to Jonathan on the phone, and then they met for dinner at a restaurant as the first waves of the storm began to approach. They talked about their relationship and about the increasing presence of Shen Fever. Over the course of their conversation, Candace decided not to tell Jonathan about the pregnancy.
