Book 1: Dr. David Strauss, Part Three: Chapters 30 - 33 Summary

The Engineer sits with the Fuhrer, counting down in a measured voice in the quiet afternoon. Just down the road, Otto's farmhouse is about four hundred yards ahead and in the middle of the experiment. The Fuhrer observes that Himmler also owned a chicken farm, then bright sparks jump from the roof, revealing the degree of electricity or heat at work. Inside the building in the distance, chickens begin to shriek, boiling alive by the microwaves cooking them. One hundred and eighty nine seconds, the Engineer notes. They go to observe firsthand, and while the Fuhrer is more than pleased and considers the ovens ready to go, the Engineer's disappointment is obvious. He notices that there are still live birds to some degree at the top of the barn...
