At the start of the poem, little is known about the speaker apart from that she is a woman traveling alone. She’s most likely young, and her reason for paying for passage is left to the imagination. Once “sacrificed”, the speaker undergoes a transformative rebirth and becomes a creature driven by vengeance. At this point the speaker loses her humanity and becomes merciless like the sea.
