Describe the circumstances of Burton and Speke's feud. How does the author divide culpability between the two men?

Burton and Speke's feud begins during the attack at Berbera, when Speke perceives Burton of accusing him of cowardice. The tensions are exacerbated when Burton publishes Speke's journals without giving him credit. During their joint exploration, the two men are constantly at odds over petty matters, and when they return, Speke underhandedly betrays Burton and takes credit for the whole expedition. These events pit the men in a contested debate over the true source of the Nile.

The author places the blame for the continuing battle at Speke's feet. Burton desired resolution early on and wished that Speke had come forward about his grievances. Instead, he brooded on them until they fomented an irreparable hostility. The two men are never able to make amends before Speke's death.

Discuss how the author frames European racism during the mid 19th century. How are the Burton and Speke's views on race described in the text?
