Profession, Chapter 5 Summary

Richard's teacher yells at him for delaying applications for teaching positions. The teacher asks Richard if he is waiting, because he thinks being a minority will bring the jobs to him. Richard starts applying to schools, and by the beginning of the year, he starts to receive job opportunities from prestigious universities that pay well. He delays accepting any of these positions, because he is wrestling with what decision to make. Another graduate student tells him that he is accepting a teaching position in another state, because it is one of the few he's been offered. Taking this job will separate him from his daughter. When he questions Richard about what positions he has been offered, and Richard tells him, he becomes angry. He tells Richard that they both make decent grades and have excellent academic skills.
