Point of View

The story begins in the third-person subjective from the viewpoint of a woman who lived in Memphis in 1893. Because of this perspective, the reader sees events as they unfold, but they also have insight into the way, Amelia Connor thinks and feels.

Chapter 1 takes place in July of 2005 and the point-of-view shifts. It is still third person but it's now from Hayley's viewpoint. This holds true for most of the story, but every once in a while there are shifts in the point-of-view between Hayley, Amelia, Harper, and Roz. Sometimes the shift in the point-of-view occurs within a single paragraph.

Generally, the shift occurs in a natural manner so the reader doesn't get confused. However, the shifts between Amelia and Hayley can get confusing. This makes sense since Amelia possesses Hayley, sliding in and out of her mind. The reader comes to learn the finer nuances...
