Although the poem is rooted in the memorial room of Winchester Cathedral, the majority of it dips in and out of a range of Jane Austen novels including Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility. The speaker uses these novels as a framework within which to explore their perspective on humanity and human relationships. In doing so, they stress the universality of these themes.
