Summary

“Part Five: Nina” is narrated by Nina in the present tense. In Chapter 33, Nina describes the horrors of being in county jail. Her public defender tells her that she is being tried for grand theft because her name was found on the lease of a storage unit full of antiques. They traced a pair of chairs back to a robbery reported by Alexi Petrov, who identified Nina in a photo lineup. Her bail is posted at 80,000, but she cannot afford to pay it, so she waits in jail for her trial. Neither Lachlan nor her mother visit her. Nina begins to suspect that Lachlan turned her in. After three weeks, her mother finally comes to visit her, but she cannot help her with bail. A month later, Nina gets another visitor and is surprised to see Vanessa Liebling. The two women...
