Summary

The prologue is told in an omniscient third and takes place during April of sixth grade. Alison, who would disappear in June, was having a sleepover with her four best friends: Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily. The girls were swapping clothes and trying on each others’ things when they noticed that a creepy neighbor boy, Toby Cavanaugh, was spying on them. Alison said that they ought to take revenge, and the other girls reluctantly agreed. Alison went across the street to light one of Toby’s fireworks off near his treehouse to scare him, and the other girls waited. When they heard Alison set the firework off, they looked out the window and saw that the treehouse was on fire. Alison came inside and told the girls that everything was going to be okay. They watched as paramedics carried away Jenna Cavanaugh...
