Ponyboy's suit

Ponyboy's suit is a symbol for his manhood and masculinity. At his father's wedding in Vienna, Ponyboy has two options for what to wear -- a dress that his mother bought him and a suit that he bought for himself. He decides to wear the dress, but regrets the decision almost immediately upon arriving. He relapses that night and gets drunk. However, when he goes to visit Toni in Paris shortly thereafter, he wears the suit and is complimented by Toni. This eventually emboldens him to give his new name, Eliot, to a stranger on the street.
