Summary

Chapter 52 begins with “perseverar,” which means “to preserve.” Jade and Maxine take advantage of nice weather to go for a walk. Jade reveals the difficult place her friendship has reached with Sam. Maxine says she should talk to Sam about her feelings, but Jade says the “point of friendship is to be able to be yourself, to just exist with someone who gets you while you get them” (195). Maxine disagrees, saying that Lee Lee “gets” Jade but that Sam is different. She points out that Jade pledged not to give up on things so easily, and Jade realizes she needs to talk to school officials about the study abroad program and that she cannot give up on her friendship with Sam.
