Europe

Europe is the general setting for this novel. Although Sissie draws distinctions between some of the European countries she visits—most notably, between France, Germany and England—it is important to note that Sissie most often thinks of Europe before any unique nation-state. The novel’s references to Europe suggest that Europe is not only a geographical setting but also a metaphorical shorthand for colonialism and its numerous stereotypes and assumptions. In general, the novel hits back against stereotypes of Europe as the center of civilization and the birthplace of enlightenment ideas like humanism. Sissie’s criticism of her plane’s trajectory, which enters the continent of Europe as though it were entering a new day and a new day, is also a critique of Europe’s projected self-image in the world.
