Mrs. Wilfer is upset to learn that Bella Wilfer has married John Rokesmith behind her back. However, she tells her husband that Bella is welcome to come to her. Bella does, and embraces her mother joyously. She apologizes for having run away and getting married without telling them. On their walk home, John asks if she minds being poor, but she says it doesn't matter as long as he has her. Bella tells him later that she thinks she may be pregnant.
