Summary

In Chapter 4, Fong See and Letticie arrive in Los Angeles in 1897 and open their first store with the Americanized name F. Suie One Company in the middle of the Caucasian business center. The company continues the underwear business but expands to furniture, embroidery and, finally, the most profitable, antiques. While Ticie longed for a house for the growing family—she gives birth to two sons— Fong See buys an automobile and is driven by a chauffeur. In 1901, Fong See and his family, after obtaining permission from the U.S. government, travel to China to meet Fong See’s family and to purchase antiques. Ticie meets Yong, Fong See’s first wife, and the thirty years of hard labor have made Yong a wrinkled and shriveled old woman. Ticie contracts smallpox and is near death, but with Fong Dun Shung’s daily herbal regimen...
