Summary
“Mitchell Zukor was missing” (294). Narration describes a search made of the tidy, organized bank by a woman first identified only as “she.” She sees the tall and dangerous barricade outside the bank, and inside finds carefully stacked supplies, a clean office area, and a ready sleeping area, but no sign of Mitchell. Meanwhile, the language of the chapter hints that substantial amounts of time has passed – there are references to monthly visits and to lists of supplies that “she” brings back with her every time “she” returns. Narration also includes a brief description of a pair of Mitchell’s neighbors, settlers eager to have Mitchell over for a visit.
Narration eventually reveals that “she” is Jane, that she has established Future Days as a successful business in Manhattan, and that she brings supplies to Mitchell, along with letters from his parents, every...
