Summary

At the start of chapter XVII, the sawmill has begun to smell because of the corpses. The students clean it up, and Jon-Johan threatens to snitch on them in order to get them to not cut off his finger. Sofie says they will “take the whole hand” if he does not show up the next day to have his finger cut off, and Otto beats him up to get him to stop yelling. The next day, Jon-Johan shows up crying to the sawmill. He begins crying for his mother when he sees the knife. They drag him over, and Sofie tells him to put his finger off or she will cut off more of his hand. Eventually, he puts his finger out, and Sofie cuts it off. Holy Karl pushes him in his trailer back toward home.
