Summary

In Chapter 10, "Fall 1991, Sixth Form," because her family had decided to drop the case, Crawford returned to SPS. Not long after arriving, Crawford realized there was “an adversary” who she would be “wrestling with all year” (314).

Initially, things felt peaceable. Then Scotty broke up with her. His coach had told the team she had an STD. Because she did not yet know that the school had invaded her medical files, Crawford blamed her parents. She began breaking rules in small ways.

One night, Alexander Ault yelled an insult at Crawford while she was walking. He told her he was trying to get her attention. He did not care what others said about her, and believed her story. They began dating. Alex was kind and gracious. She now wonders if he might have saved her life (331). Teachers and coaches punished Alex for dating Crawford...
