Point of View

My Sister’s Grave is written in third-person. The majority of the novel focuses on Tracy, the main character. The events, like the original trial and Edmund’s hearing for post-conviction relief, are narrated through Tracy’s perspective. The narrator discusses what is happening and shares Tracy’s emotions, thoughts, and memories. While this novel could reasonably have been written from the first person point of view from Tracy’s perspective, the author chooses the third person point of view to keep the story less emotional and unbiased. As Sarah’s sister, Tracy would have given a very biased opinion of her sister and her sister’s death. Being immersed in Sarah’s life and death, Tracy’s recounting of the story likely would have been very emotional.
