Summary

In Part One, Chapter 1, when Areum’s parents, Mari and Daesu, first started seeing each other, Mari's father was not happy. He did not like Daesu, who was 16 and lacked direction. The only thing he was good at was Tae Kwon Do. When Mari's father asked him about his skills, Daesu realized he was best "at giving up" (10). Because Mari's parents thought Daesu "was an idiot," they failed to recognize his good qualities (10). After Daesu got Mari pregnant, Mari's father urged him to finish school and get a job. Daesu started working for a construction company. Leaving school and starting work made Daesu feel that he was entering "real life" (12).
