Summary

In Chapter 9, when Turtle visits her grandfather for a cribbage game, he asks her if she is going to prom. She says that she is not but he advises her on how to get Martin to buy her a dress regardless. Grandpa tells Turtle that he cannot believe how Martin is raising her. Turtle defends her father and says that he loves her but Grandpa advises her not to lie to herself. As her grandfather continues to kid her, she finally admits there is a boy she likes, she is drawn in by the way her grandfather smiles with pleasure. He continues to talk about the dance but Turtle reminds herself about the reality of her life.

When Turtle arrives back at her home where Martin is playing poker with his friends, he is clearly angry that Turtle loves her grandfather and wants...
