Summary

Legat wakes up to scratching at his door. He puts the German document in his nightstand, then opens the door to Hartmann. Legat is angry and afraid when Hartmann insists they leave, but they finally meet at the back of the hotel. Hartmann grins. Legat checks for pursuers, but the road is empty. Policemen salute when they see the car’s insignia. Hartmann laughs, and Legat wonders if he is sane.

Legat catches a town’s name: Dachau. He finds the obviousness of their destination insulting. Hartmann pulls up facing the barbed-wire fences. He points out that Czechs transferred in the agreement will end up in Dachau, and Legat calls him naïve: they will arrive anyway, whether Hitler takes them by force or agreement. The “if” of the conspiracy is too large. Their shouting alerts the guard dogs and searchlights...
