Summary

The narrative moves ahead 18 months, and Walt is continuing with his training and his work on the farm. Yehudi seems optimistic about Walt’s progress. Walt notices that Yehudi is wearing Walt’s severed pinky joint in a small container of formaldehyde on a necklace. Walt says that he wants it back someday, and Yehudi agrees to this. A drought causes a food shortage on the farm. One day, Yehudi brings a newspaper to the farm and tells Walt that Walt’s favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals, just won the 1926 World Series. One day, Yehudi brings a large load of canned food to the farm, thus ending their food shortage. Walt later learns that the money for the food was given by Marion Witherspoon, who has made a monetary investment into Walt’s training and whom Yehudi is apparently courting. She soon...
