Summary

One morning Zep arrived at Mrs. Falala's barn looking very sad and it was obvious that he had been crying. He told Reena and Luke that one of the cows at Birchmere Farm died during the night. The animal probably died from some kind of respiratory problem, but they were not sure. Reena and Luke were immediately concerned for Yoland and Zora, but Zep told them that the cows would be fine. He then told the children that some cows live long lives, but that most of the animals that are raised on the farm are sold and turned into hamburger. This upset them very much.

At dinner that night, Luke and Reena could barely eat. They discussed their meal - chicken noodle soup - and Luke suddenly realized that the meat in it came from a once living chicken. Reena...
