Chapters 5-7 Summary

Chapter 5. The king instructs his daughter, Princess Teresina, to tell Mangus of her experiences. Teresina reports that she has been seeing a ghost in the corridor outside her bedchambers off and on for nearly a month. Teresina says that it happens about the same time each night and that one of her ladies in waiting has seen it. Teresina has also reported it to her tutor and her mother, as well as her father. Teresina claims the ghost wants her to go into the afterlife with it. The king wants Mangus to find out if this story is true and to rid the castle of this haunting within a few days. Mangus insists he does not believe in ghosts, but the king seems to believe this will not interfere with Mangus' investigation.
