National City

National City is located in Southern California. It is a predominately Hispanic city. Uno lives there, and Danny's paternal side of the family lives there as well. When Danny's mother goes to San Francisco for the summer to live with her boyfriend, Danny goes to National City to stay with his father's family, which is large and loving. Danny feels ostracized from both the Lopez family and the National City community because he is lighter than almost anyone else, but he desperately wants to fit in. Uno, on the other hand, has lived in National City his whole life and wants nothing more than to escape the city and live with his father.
