‘Liberal’ White People

A central premise of this book is that many white people who consider themselves ‘liberal’ and ‘progressive’ actually have deeply ingrained, subconscious biases. These white people reflexively reinforce and contribute to white supremacy, often without even realizing it. White privilege insulates white people from the realities of racism and white supremacy that dominate culture. Additionally, because white privilege is defined by a default level of comfort and ignorance, it is inherently difficult and painful for white people to move away from this privilege. In order for people with white privilege to support antiracism movement, it is necessary for them to recognize their privilege and their habitual reinforcements of white supremacy. This work is painful, but not nearly as painful as what non-white people face under white supremacy.
